Holy Matrimony
The sacrament of marriage joins a man and a woman in a covenant blessed by the Church, a sign of the union of Christ and the Church. The wedding service includes the Service of Betrothal and the Crowning, and is rich in symbolism — the rings, the crowns, the common cup, and the dance of Isaiah around the altar.
Requirements and Preparation
At least one Orthodox spouse. A civil marriage license from the State of Illinois. A pre-marital meeting with the priest. Sponsors (koumbaroi) who are Orthodox in good standing. If a previous marriage exists, a Church divorce or annulment may be required.
Questions Families Often Ask
- Can the wedding take place during a fast?
- Weddings are not celebrated during the four major fasting seasons (Great Lent, the Apostles' Fast, the Dormition Fast, the Nativity Fast) or on certain feast eves. The priest will help you choose a date that honors the Church's calendar.
- Who serves as koumbaros / koumbara?
- The koumbaros (sponsor) exchanges the rings and crowns the couple during the service. He or she must be a baptized and chrismated Orthodox Christian in good sacramental standing.
- Can the wedding be celebrated outside the church?
- Orthodox weddings are celebrated in the temple of the Church, not in outdoor or off-site locations. Reception and celebration may follow elsewhere.
