Holy Chrismation
Chrismation is the sacrament of the Holy Spirit — the seal of the gift of the Spirit given immediately after baptism. Adults entering the Orthodox Church from another Christian tradition are typically received through Chrismation following a period of catechesis.
Requirements and Preparation
An Orthodox sponsor and a period of catechesis with the priest, ordinarily six to twelve months. A patron saint chosen during the catechumenate.
Questions Families Often Ask
- I am from a Christian tradition that already practices baptism. Will I be re-baptized?
- Most often, no. Adults from a Trinitarian Christian tradition are usually received by Chrismation alone, recognizing the baptism already received. The priest will discern this with you during catechesis.
- How long does catechesis take?
- There is no fixed schedule, but six to twelve months is typical. Catechesis is shaped by your background, questions, and the rhythm of the liturgical year.
