Holy Chrismation

Chrismation is the sacrament of the Holy Spirit — the seal of the gift of the Spirit given immediately after baptism. Adults entering the Orthodox Church from another Christian tradition are typically received through Chrismation following a period of catechesis.

Requirements and Preparation

An Orthodox sponsor and a period of catechesis with the priest, ordinarily six to twelve months. A patron saint chosen during the catechumenate.

Questions Families Often Ask

I am from a Christian tradition that already practices baptism. Will I be re-baptized?
Most often, no. Adults from a Trinitarian Christian tradition are usually received by Chrismation alone, recognizing the baptism already received. The priest will discern this with you during catechesis.
How long does catechesis take?
There is no fixed schedule, but six to twelve months is typical. Catechesis is shaped by your background, questions, and the rhythm of the liturgical year.
